Maverick’s Last Stand

Uncategorized, politics

The sun is setting on the 2008 Presidential Campaign and with only twenty days left it may also be setting on John McCain’s political career.

Polls show double digit leads for Senator Barack Obama, battleground states are leaning away from McCain and the economy continues to weigh down the candidate who had hoped to run on foreign policy.

Tonight in New York, John McCain makes his final stand.  The last of three Presidential Debates will mark the last time he can stare down his opponent and, as he promised to chanting crowds at his stump speech, FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!

While McCain has a reputation of bouncing back and his primary campaign showed that earlier this year, what does he have left to throw at Obama to knock the Senator from Illinois off stride?  McCain’s campaign has stumbled looking for a message so much that political pundits are commenting on its ever changing theme.  Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden is labeling John McCain as erratic.

As Americans watched McCain/Palin rallies grow increasingly more rambunctious and scary, shouting “terrorist” and “kill him” in regards to Obama, McCain again shifted to a more respectable McCain-like opponent. However, the bar has been set with the Republican base.  Realizing that defeat is all but inevitable, they want red-meat in tonight’s debate.  They want a fight.  They want the kitchen sink.  And the kitchen sink is Resco, Rev. Wright & Bill Ayers.  Regardless of its relevance or lack thereof, regardless of the truthfulness of the claims and despite the overwhelming issue among voters being the economy, the Republican base wants dirty laundry. Akin to a cell phone commercial where the buyer is warned about a “dead zone” in a motel room and settles for “the towels are scratchy”, Republicans want to grasp at any satisfying jab at the opponent who up to now has been bulletproof.  Obama has asked why John McCain doesn’t have the guts to make these character charges to his face almost challenging him to take that strategy.

Whether John McCain will serve up what his base wants or whether he will make a last ditch effort to woo some independent undecided voters by sticking to real issues is anyone’s guess.  It is impossible to predict the behavior of an erratic campaign.
